Acupuncture During Pregnancy

Acupuncture can help ease common discomforts that arise during pregnancy, and may reduce medical interventions during labour.

In the first trimester Dr. van Drimmelen offers acupuncture for the management of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, and hyperemesis gravidum. Studies show that weekly or bi-weekly acupuncture treatments reduce nausea and vomiting, improve food intake and overall functionality (1) (2) (3).

In the third trimester, starting at 36 weeks, Dr. van Drimmelen offers birth preparation acupuncture (ie. cervical ripening acupuncture). Weekly treatments promote the softening and distention of the cervix, which coaxes the baby into the best possible position for birth. Research shows that this process reduces the average time a woman spends in labour, and reduces the need for medical induction, epidural anesthesia, and caesarean delivery (4).

If labour induction is indicated, Dr. van Drimmelen will offer acupuncture induction - for best outcomes treatment frequency is increased to every other day (5) (6).

If your baby is breech, Dr. van Drimmelen offers acupuncture and moxibustion to help turn the baby. For best outcomes treatments should start between 33 and 35 weeks (7) (8) (9).
