BHRT & Menopause
Bioidendical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is mostly focused on the replacement of our primary sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are derived from Mexican yam, and are molecularly identical to the hormones we naturally produce in our body.
Our sex hormones naturally decline as we age and our ovarian function declines. Progesterone starts to decline first, between the ages of 30 and 50, and estrogen declines later on, in our mid 40’s to mid 50’s. These two hormones alone are responsible for hundreds of functions in the body, and have specificity to widely distributed tissues such as the brain, ovaries, vagina, bladder, uterus, bone, skin, heart, and blood vessels. Thus, it’s not surprising that when our sex hormones decline, we don’t feel like ourselves, and we become at risk for varying health concerns.
Dr. Meghan van Drimmelen regularly uses bio-identical hormones in her practice to help women improve their quality of life throughout perimenopause and menopause. She works closely with compounding pharmacists, and will prescribe customized bio-identical hormone programs based on the individual's hormone testing results. Dr. van Drimmelen will also recommend diet and lifestyle changes, and nutritional and herbal medicines that are specific to your health needs during this phase of life.
